Diano Marina and surroundings
Diano Marina has ancient origins probably dating back to the Upper Paleolithic. Around 200 BC the Roman empire built a settlement here which had among its prerogatives the cult of the goddess Diana. From the name of the divinity, according to some, it would derive that of today's town. In the course of history the latter has been part of the Republic of Genoa and also of the Kingdom of Sardinia. In 1887, the town experienced one of the most difficult moments of its centuries-old history: the earthquake, which largely damaged Diano, causing among other things several victims. The ascent was facilitated in 1872 by the opening of the railway station on the Genoa-Ventimiglia line which made the pleasant town known to tourism and vice versa. The main economic resource has become in recent years for Diano tourism, not
only in summer but also in spring, due to its mild climate. Furthermore, the developed agricultural activity of its hinterland, rich in typical crops and numerous greenhouses dedicated in particular to basil, tomatoes and flowers, should not be overlooked. Of primary importance is the cultivation of olive trees and the production of oil, recognized throughout the world as "Taggiasca" olive oil, thanks to the numerous mills present in the area. Palazzi and villas of great historical value are: Palazzo del Parco and Villa Scarsella. A feast of the sea not to be missed is the evening of August, an event born in honor of the Madonna del Carmine, with a spectacular pyrotechnic evening in the bay illuminated by myriads of bright lights floating in front of the sea of Diano.
