Gavorrano and surroundings
Gavorrano is located on Monte Calvo at 273 meters above sea level, in its territory took place the events that led to the death of the Sienese gentlewoman Pia de 'Tolomei (as Dante tells in the fifth song of Purgatory) events that took place in Castel di Pietra. name of Gavorrano we find it mentioned for the first time in an official document of 1164, in which the castle was ceded by Frederick I to the Counts Alberti of Mangona. of the Pannocchieschis, called Nello, another protagonist of the aforementioned sad affair. Taking a step back in time we arrive at the end of the 19th century. From 1898 to the early 80s, Gavorrano was an important mining center. Here was the largest pyrite mine in Europe. Today Gavorrano is a quiet village in the upper Maremma, surrounded by hectares of Mediterranean scrub, chestnut groves, olive groves, Etruscan archaeological sites and obviously important traces of mining. The mines are no longer active, however the mining sites have been converted for cultural tourism purposes, and the Gavorrano Mining Natural Park has been created, whose visit is a unique and fascinating experience.
