Torre Faro and surroundings
The modern history of the village dates back to the 1700s, when, at the end of the Saracen and pirate raids, some inhabitants of Casale di Faro (the present Upper Lighthouse) settled in Capo Peloro to devote themselves full time to fishing. Over the years the town grew bigger and bigger and in 1747 the church of the Sacred Letter was built, thanks to the contribution of fishermen and inhabitants, who paid a small portion of their earnings to support the then small chapel. At the same time, almost on the beach of Punta Sottile, a "lantern" is built on the Ionian side, then removed with the construction of the Pilone, of which the cylindrical concrete structure remains today, shelter for the elderly and young who sheltered by the sun and wind converse of the sea and the sea. The growth of the village does not stop, and following the destruction of the earthquake of 1908 and the bombardments of the Second World War, disorderly, without a precise regulatory plan, the town extends more and more between the two seas and the lakes of Ganzirri, until in the last decades of the twentieth century the privileged place of vacation of the Messina. Over the years the first bathing beaches are born, from the Horcynus Orca on down, and numerous hotel and restaurant activities arise, which however do not affect the maritime soul of the village, tarnished by the fishing traditions and its archetypal relationship with the sea . And just the sea, with its tumults and its legends, is what has forged most of all the spirit of the place, just as the incessant work of the waves slowly shapes the shoreline. The meeting point between the waters of the Strait and the village is the beach of Capo Peloro, the "Punta", as defined by bathers, the pride of a nature reserve, that of the Lago di Capo Peloro, which extends over an area of 68.12 km and is home to over 400 aquatic species, of which at least ten are endemic. Considered as one of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily, and therefore in the world, the headland of Capo Peloro offers bathers multiple biodiversity both in flora that in the fauna, alternating sandy and pebble parts up to coastal areas of a hard and natural substratum called "Beach Rock", a conglomerate that hosts communities of aquatic organisms completely original and extensive formations of biotypes protected at community level, a unicum in all the Mediterranean Sea.
