Specchia and surroundings
Specchia, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, is located in Salento, in the province of Lecce, halfway between the Ionian and the Adriatic Sea. The town owes its name to the heaps of stones that you can still see here and there, called "mirrors", used as defense or as watchtowers against potential enemies. This small village, which has just 5,000 souls, is one of the characteristic places that are worth visiting to discover the Salento. most of the current buildings date back to the 16th-17th centuries, the inhabited center of Specchia clearly has a medieval imprint, in fact, already starting from the fifteenth century, a new arrangement was being created of the original nucleus built around the castle built on the point higher than the hill. In some places it is still possible to see the remains of the ancient defensive walls of the town and in one point in particular you can see the ancient coat of arms of Specchia where an almond tree is reproduced that grows among heaps of stones.
