Gargano bathing resort, for the quality of its bathing waters, has been awarded the Blue Flag by the Foundation for Environmental Education. It is part of the Gargano National Park and the Mountain Community of Gargano. At the beginning of the beach called the Castle, or the south of the town, stands, almost guarding Vieste, a monolith about 25 meters high called Pizzomunno which is the very symbol of the gargantuan citizen. To it are legends, often different from one another. Along the coast it is possible to admire some trawlers, ancient fishing installations with long wooden arms supporting a net. This is one of the historical elements that distinguish the Gargano area compared to the rest of Puglia, to bring it closer to the provinces bordering the north (coasts of southern Abruzzo and Molise). The surroundings of Vieste are distinguished by the presence of various tourist attractions of enormous geographic and historical interest. Vieste has always been a prominent landmark for departure and arrival to the Tremiti Islands, located not far north of the coast. The same for the Umbra Forest, which is an invaluable biological heritage for southern Italy. Do not forget: the early Christian necropolis La Salata, situated to the east of the town, is one of the oldest and most characteristic of the Mediterranean basin; the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Merino, situated not far away; the caves dug by the sea in the calcareous rock of the Gargano, which has created cavities and rock formations of the most varied and bizarre shapes (a particular example is the Pizzomunno). The same goes for the Architiello, excavated by erosion near the road to Pugnochiuso south of Vieste. The caves are the result of karst phenomena, but also the corrosive action of sea water and wind has made an important contribution. Among the caves are the broken cave, the two eyebrows, the Round Cave, the Bats, the Snake, the Viola and the Emerald.
